| Antwerp 10 miles, Belgium |
What? With over 15 thousands runners, the Antwerp 10 miles is the major running event in the region of Flanders. A marathon is organized as well the same day but earlier in the morning (1500 runners in 2010). Where? In the city centre of Antwerp (www.garmin.be/Parcours/Antwerp10Miles/fullscreen-10miles.html), crossing a few times the river Scheldt, running on both the river banks and going around the cathedral and the university area. When? The 2011 edition of the Antwerp 10 miles and marathon will take place on Sunday 17 April. The DVV Antwerp 10 Miles will start at 3.30 pm. Why? Antwerp is not only the diamond capital (apparently more than 85% of the world’s rough diamonds are traded in the city) and offers many cultural attractions. The two races are major events in the area and you will be able to run through the Kennedy and Waasland tunnels (both closed to the traffic, as most of the city centre) enjoying many music groups along the way. The options in the Flanders are endless, Brussels is only one hour away and the North Sea is a great idea for a day off. How (much)? Registration for the 2011 edition will start in October 2010 and on-site registrations are usually possible. The 2010 late fee was a reasonable €18 without T-shirt, €28 with a T-shirt. The city is well connected to Brussels (an Eurostar terminal) and the Netherlands so you can easily travel by train from most capitals in Europe or fly to Brussels airport (about 45 km from Antwerp). | Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes, France |
What? With 10000 runners from the 1st edition in 2008, the Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes quickly became the second major marathon in France (behind Paris). In 2010 a relay race has been added too (teams of 6 runners, from 3.1 km to 10.8 km). Where? From Nice to Cannes, crossing Saint-Laurent-du-Var, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Villeneuve-loubet, Antibes, Juan-Les-Pins, Golfe-Juan. And a few miles around Cap d'Antibes too. When? November 14 is the big day for 2010. No more than 15000 runners can join the 3rd edition that will start at 8.00 am. As for all the official races in France, you have to present a medical certificate (or a FFA licence) to pick up your race number. The time limit is 6 hours. Why? The best for sightseeing (take a little camera with you) and a marathon in Côte d'Azur, from the Promenade des Anglais in Nice to Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes. A flat marathon (the highest point is 34 meters, Cap d'Antibes), 100% on the seashore. Great support along the route as you run through the most famous towns in the French Riviera. How (much)? Not the cheapest race (the registration fee is from 45€ to 75€ according to the registration date) but similar to other major international events. The fee includes a finisher t-shirt and a SNCF train ticket too. Easyjet and Air Berlin offer cheap flights to Nice airport. Air France and KLM offer a 10% discount to runners. Accommodations for all budgets are available in November in Côte d'Azur, from cheap hotels at around €50 for a double room in Nizza to the most exclusive hotels on the Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes. Consider as well the many towns along the route, all served by a direct SNCF train.
