Milano

Start at the Arco della Pace in Parco Sempione and run the Corso Sempione, lined on one side with sycamores and oaks. Watch out for cars driving on the sidewalk in search of a parking place! Make a left at Piazza Firenze. Head down Viale Teodorico for several blocks, under the Fiera Milano, and make a right onto Viale Scarampo. Several blocks ahead, cross the street and head up the quiet Via Cimabue for two blocks to the famous Monte Stella. This 100-metre-high hill, built from the rubble from World War II, is now part of a marvelous park. Serious runners often train here. The one major hill in town, it offers a strenuous workout that is worth the sweat - and a great view of the red-tiled roofs of the metropolis. The hill is big-time steep, so make sure you lace them up good for the descent. Retrace your steps to Arco della Pace. The whole loop is about 8 kilometers. Reward yourself with a cooling gelato from a vendor by the castle at the other end of the park.
