Steve Prefontaine was a University of Oregon runner who held seven American track records ranging from 2,000 meters to 10,000 meters. In his travels to Europe, Prefontaine was impressed with their running courses, and upon his return he suggested to Lane County officials the idea of a para course winding through Alton Baker Park. Steve died in a automobile accident in 1975. After his death, Lane County worked closely with the Oregon Track Club and UO track coach Bill Bowerman to design and build the running trail that now winds through the park. There are three interpretive signs located at different locations along the trail.
