Paris

Runners can get splendid vistas and splendid workouts by running the Quais, or pedestrian paths, along the Seine. Begin by crossing the Pont de l'Alma and turn left up avenue Président Wilson. To the left, half way up the Avenue is the Palais de Tokyo, an imposing modernist structure housing a superb art collection. On reaching Place du Trocadéro, run past the Théâtre National de Chaillot, and take a sharp left at the middle of Palais de Chaillot down the steps facing the Eiffel Tower. Cross Pont d'Iéna and do a circuit of the Champ de Mars. Return to the right bank and run along the Quais, either at the street level or next to the water. Cross the river at Pont du Carrousel and continue along the cobbled Quais of the left bank Pont d'Austerlitz. On Sundays from noon to 5 pm, some paths are reserved for walkers and runners and rollerbladers. Avoid the Place de la Bastille, where the road warriors amass, or be prepared for some inner-city slaloming. Distance: 5.2 miles. Nearest metro: Pont de l'Alma, 7th arrondissement.
